It is not hyperbole to say that life for me ended in 1968. I was not a fan of Robert Kennedy, although his murder and the earlier murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a deeply imperfect but at the same time prophetic man, began forty years in the wilderness for people like me.
The social critic Michael Waltzer is right to say that there is Egypt and there is the promised land. Between them is the wilderness. The only way to get from Egypt to the promised land is through the wilderness.
It is almost impossible for me to say what the nomination of Senator Obama means to me. He is tough and thoughtful and careful.
